Ian Watkins, former lead singer of the British rock band Lostprophets and one of the most reviled sex offenders in the United Kingdom, was killed inside the high-security prison HMP Wakefield.
The 48-year-old musician died after being stabbed on Saturday morning. His death was confirmed by prison sources cited by the PA news agency.
Watkins was serving a sentence of nearly three decades for sexual offenses against minors. West Yorkshire Police reported that prison staff raised the alarm about the attack at approximately 9:39 a.m.
Despite the swift response of emergency medical services, the former vocalist was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is now in the hands of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. “Investigations remain ongoing,” authorities said in a preliminary statement.
Ian Watkins was convicted for crimes of extreme gravity

In 2013, Ian Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison, plus six years of extended parole. He pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offenses against children, including possession of child abuse material.
He also faced charges for attempting to rape a baby — one of the crimes that caused worldwide outrage. The judge who sentenced him stated that his offenses “plumbed new depths of depravity.”

His initial arrest occurred in 2012 after a drug raid at his home. On his electronic devices, authorities found videos and messages that incriminated him.
Evidence revealed that Watkins had exploited his fame to approach vulnerable victims. His downfall was swift and devastating, destroying the reputation of the band he had led for over a decade.
Previous violence in prison
The Ian Watkins prison stabbing did not come as a total surprise to those familiar with his history behind bars. In 2023, he had survived another attack inside HMP Wakefield, where he was stabbed and held hostage for six hours.
On that occasion, he survived with minor injuries after being rescued by prison staff. The incident highlighted the high risk he faced due to the nature of his crimes.
In addition, in 2019 he was caught with a hidden mobile phone in his cell. During a court hearing that same year, Watkins described the prison as a dangerous place.
He claimed he was housed alongside “murderers, rapists, pedophiles, serial killers — the worst of the worst.” His killing adds to a series of violent episodes that have occurred in that maximum-security prison.
