Sources cited by local outlets indicated that ICE agents entered the establishment in the morning and conducted a workplace inspection that led to the arrests.
The case has sparked concern among workers and small business owners in the area, who fear increased inspections targeting workplaces with a high presence of Latino employees.
The federal agency has not yet issued an official statement about the operation or confirmed whether additional charges will be filed against the bakery’s owners.
Why It Matters
The La Laguna Bakery case reflects a rise in ICE workplace enforcement actions along the southern border—particularly in industries such as baking, construction, and domestic services, where many undocumented workers are employed.
Although the federal administration has said it prioritizes arrests of individuals with criminal backgrounds or threats to public safety, local organizations say workplace raids still disproportionately affect migrants with no criminal history.
The Mexican community in El Paso—one of the largest in Texas—has expressed concern about the effect of these operations on the local economy and the fear they generate among immigrant families.
So far, there has been no official information on the legal status of those detained or whether they will be transferred to immigration detention centers pending deportation proceedings.

The operation came just weeks after the arrest of one of the bakery’s owners and reignited the debate over immigration raids at workplaces along the southern border.
