The raid took place on the campus of North Hills United Methodist Church, near Langdon Avenue and Rayen Street.

At the time, a food distribution program for people in need was underway.

“They came running through the parking lot while the food distribution was taking place, terrifying families and children,” said Pastor Ervin Aguilon.

The religious leader said the agents’ presence severely disrupted the atmosphere of the site.

“Our sacred space was violated,” the pastor stated when referring to what occurred.

He added that the food distribution program is an expression of God’s love for those in need.

According to Aguilon, ICE’s actions forced the suspension of the program.

He also noted that other ministry activities were affected by the operation.

Families sheltered for hours

In addition to the food distribution, after-school activities were taking place in the North Hills Church garden.

Those activities included mothers, young children, and youth from the community.

According to Pastor Aguilon, the situation forced leaders to act immediately.

“This led leaders to act and shelter everyone present in a safe room for more than four hours,” he said.

The prolonged lockdown particularly affected the children who were at the site.

The pastor described how difficult it was to witness the children’s reactions during the operation.

He said he saw a child crying while asking his frightened mother what was happening.

According to his account, families had to remain confined in a small room for four hours.

North Valley Caring Services, a nonprofit organization, also operates on the church campus.

The organization uses the campus daily to provide services and resources to people in need.

The group reported on its Facebook page that the taco vendor was arrested by federal agents.

Despite the raid, the organization stated that its Friday food distribution will continue as planned, even as concerns linger following the ICE raid at church.
