Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Wednesday that at least 1,600 of its officers and agents will wear body cameras.

This is part of the agency’s efforts to comply with transparency standards and to create public trust, EFE reported.

ICE will distribute the body cameras and provide specific training to investigative and deportation personnel.

Likewise, these measures will be implemented in the cities of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, Buffalo, and Detroit.

ICE had successfully tested the use of body cameras in a pilot program launched in December 2021, according to EFE.

Patrick J. Lechleitner, acting director of ICE, said in a statement that body cameras will help generate public trust through «transparency and accountability.»

The implementation of body cameras marks an important step forward in ICE’s efforts to improve transparency and accountability in its daily work.

By providing a visual record of interactions between agents and individuals, these cameras can help ensure greater scrutiny of law enforcement practices.

«Public trust is dependent on transparency, and our ability to effectively conduct our mission is dependent on public trust,» said Lechleitner.

«It is an essential element in our public safety and national security mission,» the statement continues.

Furthermore, he highlighted that they want to promote fundamental values and that the public will be able to see it as a show of support and trust.

He also confirmed that «ICE will distribute body-worn cameras and provide specific training to ERO and HSI personnel» in five cities as the first phase of the program.

The allocation of the body cameras is an attempt to comply with an executive order issued by President Joe Biden in 2022 to promote the use of these devices in federal law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, ICE said it is working to secure the necessary resources to ensure the full implementation of the new policy and that most of its agents have body cameras.

Therefore, the agency has emphasized its commitment to securing the necessary resources to ensure the full implementation of this new policy.

This measure is especially significant at a time when transparency and accountability are priorities for government agencies.

The decision to equip ICE agents with body cameras is also a response to other previous requests.

Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) asked the Department of Homeland Security toequip ICE with body cameras in 2017.

At that time, it was requested that both ICE agents and those from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) be equipped with body cameras.

This move has been well received by many because they seek greater support from authorities and achieve greater security.
