A 46-year-old immigrant has been handed a landmark sentence in the United States after being found guilty of multiple torture charges.

Michael Sang Correa received a penalty of 810 months in prison—equivalent to more than 67 years—for crimes that shocked the public with their brutality.

The verdict was issued on August 22 after a judicial process that detailed the crimes committed against several victims.

Correa was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit torture and five counts of torture.

According to prosecutors, the defendant subjected his victims to extreme suffering for weeks.

Testimonies revealed that he used melted plastic to burn their skin and employed various weapons in brutal beatings.

The descriptions were deemed among the most shocking ever presented in a federal court in recent years.

The case stirred outrage and served as a reminder of international efforts to hold accountable those responsible for severe human rights violations.

ICE Reaction

“Mr. Correa’s crimes were barbaric and uncivilized; they have no place in the modern world,” said Steve Cagen, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Denver.

He emphasized that the sentence for torture Michael Sang Correa received aims to send a strong message to those who commit such crimes.

“I hope this sentence provides some measure of relief to his victims and their families,” Cagen added.

The official also stressed that the case set a clear standard: HSI will pursue and bring to justice perpetrators of atrocious crimes.

An International Investigation Against Michael Sang Correa

The investigation was led by HSI Denver with support from HSI agents in Senegal.

It also involved members of the U.S. Embassy in Banjul, Gambia, as well as the FBI’s legal attaché in Senegal.

The case stood out for its international coordination and the key role of human rights organizations.

Among them was the Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center (HRVWCC), created in 2009 to identify and prosecute those responsible for torture, genocide, and war crimes.

Commitment Against Human Rights Violations

The HRVWCC has investigated individuals suspected of carrying out extrajudicial executions, persecution, child soldier recruitment, and female genital mutilation.

In this context, the case of Michael Sang Correa becomes a clear example of the reach of U.S. justice.

The sentence of more than six decades reflects the severity of the crimes and the international commitment to defending human rights, ICE noted on its website.
