U.S. intelligence officials have identified Iran as responsible for the cyberattack aimed at the presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump.

This is the first time the United States government has directly attributed to Iran the responsibility for a cyberattack which, according to the Republican candidate, was linked to Tehran, AP reported.

The announcement was made in a joint statement issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

The statement highlighted that Iranian hackers have attempted to access individuals with direct connections to the presidential campaigns of both political parties.

The FBI has also been investigating hacking attempts against the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate.

The statement also emphasized that Iran has long sought to sow discord and undermine trust in U.S. democratic institutions.

This includes using various tactics, including cyber operations, to gain access to sensitive election-related information.

This activity, according to the Intelligence Community (IC), is part of a broader effort by Tehran to influence election outcomes in favor of its national security interests.

During this election cycle, Iran’s cyber operations have been particularly aggressive, with a specific focus on U.S. presidential campaigns.

The hacking of Trump’s campaign is an example of these actions, which seek to compromise campaigns through social engineering and other methods to access valuable information.

These activities aim to influence the electoral process, a tactic not new and also used by Russia in previous election cycles.

To protect the integrity of the elections, the FBI has stepped up its efforts to track and counter these malicious activities.

The agency has been in contact with the victims of these attacks and continues to investigate to identify and disrupt the perpetrators.

The joint statement highlights the importance of enhancing online security through the use of strong passwords.

Software updates, and the activation of multi-factor authentication are also important, among other measures.

As authorities stress, attempts to influence or interfere in U.S. elections will not be tolerated, and all necessary measures will be taken.
