A U.S. Army veteran, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was responsible for a tragic attack in New Orleans on January 1.

Jabbar drove his truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street.

He caused the deaths of 14 people and injured dozens more before being shot by the police.

According to the FBI, Jabbar, 42, had pledged loyalty to the terrorist group ISIS months before the attack.

Details About the New Orleans Attacker

Hours before carrying out his plan, Jabbar posted five videos on social media expressing his support for the extremist organization.

In one of these videos, he explained that he had initially planned to kill his own family during a gathering.

However, he chose to attack strangers to draw attention to what he called «a war between believers and non-believers.»

Christopher Raia, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, offered remarks.

He stated that Jabbar was «100% inspired by ISIS» and had declared his allegiance to the group «before last summer.»

Investigators also highlighted that the attacker acted alone and that there is no evidence of accomplices.

Jabbar had a distinguished military history, serving over a decade in the Army, including a mission in Afghanistan in 2009.

He later worked in information technology and held a well-paying job.

His conversion to Islam occurred after being raised as a Christian, but authorities emphasize that his radicalization was not linked to religion but to extremist influences.

Abdur Jabbar, the attacker’s brother, described Shamsud-Din as a kind and intelligent person, noting that his behavior had changed in recent months.

This change was evident to his ex-wife, Nakedra Marsh, who limited her daughters’ visits with Jabbar due to erratic behavior.

Jabbar’s military background also includes a brief period in the Navy in 2024, from which he was discharged after failing to complete basic training within a month.

An army spokesperson confirmed that Jabbar served in human resources and information technology from 2007 to 2015, and later in the reserves until 2020.

In addition to his failed marriages with Nakedra Marsh and Shaneen Jabbar, a third woman, identified as Tiera, said she was married to him for five years and suffered abuse during the relationship.

However, she claimed she never imagined Jabbar could commit a mass attack.

The attacker’s criminal background includes two arrests in Texas, one for theft in 2002 and another for driving with an invalid license in 2005.

According to ‘The US Sun,’ in both cases, he was fined $100.

Neighbors in Houston, where Jabbar lived, described him as a calm person, although his home was surrounded by farm animals and neglected cages.

The FBI continues investigating how Jabbar was radicalized and what motivated his change in behavior.

The tragic incident has left a deep scar in New Orleans, while authorities work to prevent future similar attacks.
