Journalist Mario Guevara, a well-known Salvadoran journalist residing in the United States, was granted bail of $7,500 after appearing before an immigration judge on July 1 in Georgia.

His release on bail comes after days of tension and uncertainty within the Hispanic community, which had been closely following his case after he was detained by ICE agents during a peaceful protest.

Guevara’s arrest occurred on June 14 while he was covering the “No Kings” demonstration in Georgia, an event that sparked a debate over the use of immigration laws to intimidate journalists.

Civil rights organizations and press groups denounced the arrest as an attack on freedom of expression and demanded his immediate release.

Immigration attorney Giovanni Díaz confirmed that the bail hearing took place on Monday, during which the judge assessed whether Guevara posed any danger to the community.

Díaz stated that they presented solid evidence showing the journalist poses no risk and has strong legal grounds to apply for permanent residency in the country.

Guevara’s case sparked a broad wave of solidarity among journalists, activists, and Latino communities who demanded respect for journalistic work and the right to document protests.

Since his detention, the case has raised alarms about potential abuses of authority and the use of immigration enforcement as a tool to silence critical voices or deter coverage of demonstrations.
