A shocking tragedy has rocked Cleveland, Ohio, after the death of a baby who was left home alone in her playpen for 10 days.

Kristel Candelario pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment.

Court documents disclose that Candelario left her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, unattended in their home for over a week.

This neglect tragically resulted in the child’s death, prompting authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to The Associated Press, the Ohio mother left her 16-month-old daughter home alone for 10 days last summer.

She reached a plea agreement with Cuyahoga County prosecutors, who dismissed two murder counts and a felonious assault charge.

Kristen Candelario pleaded guilty to aggravated child endangerment and aggravated murder.

Candelario now faces life in prison when she appears for sentencing on March 18.

According to USA TODAY, the Cleveland Division of Police received a call on June 16, 2023, and found Jailyn unresponsive in the home.

Despite the efforts by to resuscitate her, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial reports suggest that Candelario had left her daughter unattended to take trips to Detroit and Puerto Rico, without arranging childcare for her daughter.

The 16-month old apparently was left unattended for the entire time.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office released a press statement on Thursday, providing details of the distressing conditions in which Jailyn was discovered.

According to USA TODAY, the girl’s padded Pack-N-Play playpen was covered in urine and feces, and the blankets were in a deplorable state.

Investigators concluded that the infant had been left alone and unattended for approximately 10 days.

Although there were no apparent signs of physical injury, an autopsy conducted by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Jailyn had tragically passed away due to starvation and severe dehydration.

According to AP, the girl was «extremely dehydrated» when emergency services discovered her, after Candelario called police.

The tragic death of Jailyn Candelario has left an indelible scar on the Cleveland community, given the terrible circumstances surrounding her passing.

It serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of childhood and the responsibility parents have to look after their children
