Lara, married to Eric Trump, is seen as the leading candidate to fill the vacancy Rubio could leave.

The Florida senator has been nominated by Donald Trump to serve as the next Secretary of State.

The final decision on the Senate replacement will be made by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis is also reportedly under consideration for Secretary of Defense, as local media outlets have noted.

This comes amid allegations of abuse and alcoholism against Pete Hegseth, the current nominee for the position.

Despite the controversy, Donald Trump defended Hegseth in an interview with NBC, expressing confidence in his confirmation.
