- It is a story with an unexpected ending, but it captivates one all the same.
From Guatemala, we bring you the fascinating legend of the goldfinch, a story that has endured through the centuries in the Atlantic area of our lands.
The legend tells that hundreds of years ago, an indigenous tribe settled in this region, and among its members was a warrior known for his cruelty, named Batsu.
One day, Batsu decided to look for a wife and set his sights on a beautiful young woman named Jilgue. This young woman was known for her habit of walking through the forest while singing like a little bird.
However, when Jilgue learned of Batsu’s intentions, she felt deep fear and decided to flee to hide in the dense forest.
Batsu’s Wrath

The news of Jilgue’s flight reached Batsu, who, enraged, sent his warriors to look for her.
The warriors soon began to hear Jilgue’s beautiful singing, but every time they approached the place it came from, the young woman had mysteriously disappeared.
Faced with this situation, Batsu made a desperate and cruel decision: he ordered the forest to be set on fire.
As the flames began to devour the forest, Batsu shouted to Jilgue that if she came out of her hiding place, she could be saved from the certain death that was approaching.
Jilgue’s Decision

However, the brave young woman replied that she preferred death rather than fall into Batsu’s hands. The fire intensified, and the forest was filled with smoke and despair.
In that moment of anguish, something extraordinary happened. Jilgue fell to the ground, agonizing, but from among the flames and smoke emerged a small ash-colored bird, with a beak and legs of a vibrant red.
This little bird began to sing with a melodious and beautiful voice that resonated in the hearts of all those present.
It was not the song of a common bird; it was the voice of Jilgue, who had found a new way to express herself.
Legend of the goldfinch

Since then, in the forests of our lands, the songs of the goldfinches can be heard.
Those small birds with ash plumage, red beaks and legs, carry in their voice the essence of Jilgue’s bravery and determination.
This legend of the goldfinch reminds us that beauty and resilience can arise even in the darkest and most challenging moments of life.
