Horrific crime shocks a community. Police in Clearwater, Florida, reported that a 24-year-old man, identified as Logan López, killed his mother on the night of Saturday, July 16, after planning the vicious murder for an entire year.

Officers responded to a report shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday after a neighbor «heard a woman screaming for help in a nearby apartment,» according to a statement from the Clearwater Police Department posted on Facebook, Newsweek reported.

Logan López confessed to the gruesome crime

When police arrived at the scene they found the victim, Mary Beth López, 53, dead, said WTSP. The police said a man at the crime scene, Logan Lopez, confessed to officers, and later homicide detectives, that he had killed the woman, who was his own mother.

“The suspect said he had lured his mother to his apartment for the purpose of ‘putting an end to her’ after planning the murder for a year. He beat her with a hammer and also stabbed her multiple times,” police stated when reporting the disturbing event.

Logan López planned the murder for a year

Logan López has been charged with first degree murder. Police said he has no arrest record. Newsweek has reached out to the Clearwater Police Department for comment, but had no further details as of the time of publishing the article.

On the other hand, ABC Action News reported on Monday, July 18, that the police stated that Logan López had revealed that he had «lured» his mother to his apartment to kill her and admitted that he had even spent a year planning the murder.

He beat her with a hammer and stabbed her to death

«As she came inside, he closed the door,» Commander Natalia Illich-Hailey said. «He came up behind her and struck her with a hammer. He struck her multiple times with the hammer. He also stabbed her with a knife multiple times,” the official stated, describing the dramatic scene of the woman’s murder.

A neighbor called 911 when she heard a woman screaming for help around 5 p.m. Officers later said they found Mary Beth dead in the apartment. «You see the worst in people, but you don’t see this brutality very often,» the sergeant said, according to ABC Action News.

Logan López had no criminal record

That outlet, noted that Logan López had no criminal record. However, last year the Baker Act was applied to him after an incident with another member of his family in Tampa. Mary Beth’s autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

As of Monday morning, there was no reported motive for why Logan López wanted to kill his mother for a year or why he finally did it in the most horrifying way over the weekend. The investigation remains active.
