U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday the selection of a Latina for his upcoming cabinet.
The appointee is Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer from Oregon, who will serve as the next Secretary of Labor in the administration set to begin this January.
“She has worked tirelessly with the business and labor sectors to develop the U.S. workforce and support hardworking men and women,” Trump stated in a press release.
The former president (2017–2021), who won the November 5 election against Democrat Kamala Harris, made the announcement with high praise for Chavez-DeRemer’s qualifications.
Lori Chavez-DeRemer Named Secretary of Labor

According to Chavez-DeRemer, her grandmother’s family emigrated from Mexico to the United States to provide their children with a better life and the chance to achieve the American Dream.
“I’m proud of my Latina roots and of the accomplishments of the Hispanic community in our great country,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
Chavez-DeRemer began her public service career in 2002 on the Happy Valley, Oregon, Parks Committee.
She later won a seat on the City Council, where she eventually became president.
In 2010, Lori Chavez-DeRemer was elected mayor, becoming the first Latina to hold the position in the city, and was reelected in 2014.
In 2022, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.
She became one of the first Latinas in Congress and the first Republican woman from Oregon to serve in the House.
“I look forward to working with her to create enormous opportunities for American workers,» Trump said.
«Expand training and apprenticeships, increase wages, improve working conditions, and bring back manufacturing jobs,” he added.

The mother of two daughters, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, along with her husband, Dr. Shawn DeRemer, founded an anesthesia management company and opened several medical clinics in the Pacific Northwest.
