Senator Marco Rubio, nominated for Secretary of State in Donald Trump’s administration, addressed this Wednesday the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
Rubio described this measure as «imperfect» but «probably appropriate» to combat drug trafficking.
During his confirmation hearing in the Senate, he emphasized his hope to work closely with Mexico in a «perfect world.»
The Republican highlighted that the cartels are «sophisticated criminal organizations» that control large areas of the Mexican border.
Trump Promises to Designate Cartels as Terrorist Organizations, Rubio Supports This Measure

Trump, who will assume the presidency on January 20, has promised this designation for drug cartels.
Marco Rubio considered that labeling these groups as terrorists would help to identify and combat their impact.
«They are terrorists by nature,» affirmed Rubio, insisting on the severity of their actions in both countries.
He accused the cartels of «terrorizing the United States with mass immigration and drug trafficking.»
Regarding a possible military intervention in Mexico, Marco Rubio noted that it would be an option in Trump’s hands.
However, he expressed a preference for cooperation with the Mexican government to address the challenge.

«They can also do more to face this problem that affects both their nation and ours,» he pointed out.
The designation as terrorist organizations could open new paths in the fight against organized crime.
