According to EFE, a contingent of 700 U.S. Marines was deployed on Monday in Los Angeles County to reinforce National Guard operations.
The move follows an order from President Donald Trump, who authorized the use of military force in response to recent protests sparked by immigration raids.
The Pentagon reported that U.S. Northern Command activated a Marine infantry battalion, which had been on alert since the weekend.
The Department of Defense confirmed that these troops will join the over 2,000 National Guard soldiers already patrolling the region.
Trump Defends His Decision to Deploy the Marines in Los Angeles

The official aim is to protect federal personnel and property amid rising social unrest.
The deployment comes after a series of immigration raids conducted last Friday, which triggered demonstrations across several areas of Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles—home to nearly 10 million residents—is the most populous county in the U.S. and a stronghold of resistance to Trump’s immigration policies.
The president stated the situation is “under control” but did not rule out further militarization in the event of renewed protests.
California Pushes Back

“We must ensure the safety of our citizens and federal personnel,” Trump said during a brief statement from the White House.
The military intervention prompted a swift backlash from California authorities, who called the deployment “illegal.”
The state government, led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, filed a lawsuit against the federal administration on Monday.
The suit argues that using troops to control civilian demonstrations violates constitutional principles.
Marines in Los Angeles Deepen Social Tensions

Governor Newsom strongly criticized the federal response, stating that it only fuels tension and criminalizes peaceful protest.
“What we are witnessing is a dangerous authoritarian escalation,” Newsom declared.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, also a Democrat, denounced the military presence.
She revealed that she had received threats from the White House over her perceived inaction.
Migrant Communities and Activists React
Senior federal officials allegedly warned that both Bass and Newsom could face charges if they fail to “restore order.”
These threats sparked strong condemnation from civil rights leaders, human rights organizations, and members of Congress.
Local activists cautioned that the sight of Marines in the streets would only amplify fear within migrant communities.
“This isn’t about safety; it’s about sending a message of intimidation,” said Maribel León, spokesperson for the California Human Rights Coalition.
Political Climate and Intensified Protests
In neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, South Central, and Pacoima, the military presence became visible as early as Sunday night.
Residents report night patrols, checkpoints, and helicopter flyovers in densely populated areas.
Several organizations have launched emergency hotlines to provide legal and psychological support to individuals feeling threatened.
This military deployment unfolds against the backdrop of a highly polarized political climate.
