A federal appeals court on Thursday authorized President Donald Trump’s administration to suspend Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood while ongoing litigation continues.
The ruling, issued by the First Circuit Court of Appeals, overturned a lower court’s decision and kept in place the measure promoted by Trump and his Republican allies.
The decision stems from a policy approved over the summer that bans state Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood for one year, one of the nation’s leading providers of reproductive health services.
Reproductive rights groups have criticized the measure as a direct attack on women’s health and an attempt to restrict access to essential medical services.

It is worth noting that federal law already prohibits Medicaid funds from being used to perform abortions, but the measure promoted by the Trump administration also affects other basic services provided by Planned Parenthood.
Among the services impacted are primary care, routine medical check-ups, and other essential care for hundreds of thousands of patients.

The ruling was unanimous and included the votes of Judges Gustavo A. Gelpí, Lara E. Montecalvo, and Seth R. Aframe, who supported the temporary withholding of federal reimbursements.
This outcome represents a heavy financial blow to the organization, which relies largely on Medicaid funds to sustain its operations.

Planned Parenthood responded with a lawsuit, arguing that the suspension appeared specifically designed to target the country’s leading abortion providers.
The organization warned that the policy not only reduces its operational capacity but also limits access to healthcare for vulnerable communities.
The legal uncertainty has created a complex scenario in which different federal courts have issued conflicting rulings on the measure.
Unanimous Ruling Increases Financial Pressure
This context has left the operation of numerous clinics and the continuity of care for low-income patients in limbo.
The legal dispute will continue in the coming weeks, as Planned Parenthood and civil rights groups attempt to halt the advance of the policy promoted by the White House.
