Among the victims were the truck driver, who remained inside the vehicle, and a person who was burned inside the collective taxi.

The Government of Campeche is working in coordination with authorities in Yucatán and the municipality of Calikiní, where most of the victims were from.

Authorities Identify Victims and Support Families

Meanwhile, Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena visited the Forensic Medical Service on Sunday to support families in the identification process.

“I expressed our solidarity and support for the recognition and transfer of their loved ones to their communities,” Díaz Mena wrote on social media.

Initial reports indicate that the collective taxi was transporting construction workers traveling from Mérida to various communities in Yucatán and Campeche when the accident happened.

When the cargo truck loaded with beer struck the taxi, it was pushed into another vehicle, veered off the road, and overturned.

Mérida-Campeche Accident Brings Regional Mourning

The collision caused the vehicle to catch fire, trapping several passengers inside, while others were thrown onto the asphalt.

Images shared by local media show the taxi completely burned out and the remains of vehicles still in flames along the federal highway.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the Mérida-Campeche accident, but noted that investigations are already underway to determine the circumstances.

Both the Yucatán and Campeche governments urged drivers to take extra precautions and respect speed limits on federal highways.

This multi-vehicle crash is considered one of the deadliest in the Yucatán region in recent years, leaving grief and shock across communities in southeastern Mexico.
