  • Venezuelan rants against Mexicans
  • Video on TikTok causes outrage
  • The Venezuelan’s words caused controversy

“We were not born to work… Mexicans were born to work,” begins a video that about 10 people have sent to me via my social media.

How did I react? His words provoked feelings of indignation and shame in me, prompting me to write this note as a public apology to Mexicans and all others affected.

The video, lasting one minute and six seconds, was recorded by an immigrant who identifies himself as Venezuelan on his social networks. I choose not to mention his name as I believe he does not deserve any space or publicity.

In his speech, he adopts a mocking tone laced with irony, urging Mexicans and Central Americans to work and pay taxes. He jests, «Because we Venezuelans are all about partying.»

«What day is it today? Monday? What’s the date in December? We don’t keep track. We were not born to work, Mexicans were born to work…” he is heard saying in the video.

He goes on to say, «Call us for parties, for wakes… even at the wake, we’ll be there to liven things up,» the individual is heard declaring.

However, his speech, which also disparages our heritage, does not stop there.

He continues unrestrained, disregarding the potential consequences for those who have come to this country seeking opportunities for advancement and an escape from the hardships prevalent in Venezuela.

«We need them to keep paying taxes so we can chase Biden’s stimulus checks,» the man declares, pointing his camera at a celebration inside an apartment.

One of my primary motivations for writing this note is to offer an apology to my community and to assert that I, Carlos Moreno, a Venezuelan by birth and a migrant in the United States, do not share his sentiments.

This individual does not represent Venezuelans; that’s not who we are.

Moreover, my family is multicultural; I am engaged to a Mexican, and my best friends hail from various parts of Latin America, including Central America.

I hold deep admiration, respect, and love for them all.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this country, it’s that upon our arrival, we are all on equal footing; we share the same identity, that of Latinos, that of immigrants.

It deeply pains me to witness such things! Videos like these foster animosity among our communities and create divisions among Latinos.

They set people of different nationalities against each other, distracting us from focusing on issues that truly matter.

We must not let these videos taint our hearts. Let’s stand against letting hatred, racism, and xenophobia infiltrate our community.

Our most effective response to such content is to report it.

Let’s make it a point to denounce such incidents, but more importantly, let’s recognize that the comments of one individual do not represent an entire country or community.

Some might say, «You’re overreacting,» «It was just a joke,’ or ‘It’s humor.»

To me, it’s not. Such behavior is simply unacceptable, disrespectful, and shows a complete lack of responsibility towards those who think and act differently.

Now, as we are less than 10 days away from the start of an election year, it’s more crucial than ever to unite.

They do not justify their attitude

We must stand together to support Latinos and elect a candidate who truly represents our interests. This is a pivotal moment where we, as a community, must unite and resist those who seek to divide us.

We must be vigilant against those pursuing short-term gains and those who still fail to recognize the immense responsibility we hold for future generations.

In this context, I am not just Venezuelan, Russian, or American; I am a migrant who loves this country and appreciates the incredible opportunity to live here among immigrants from all corners of the globe. Together, we contribute to our mutual growth and cultural enrichment.
