The Mexican Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, acknowledged this Tuesday that the possibility of aerial espionage by the United States cannot be ruled out.
Although he affirmed that no violations of national airspace have been detected.
During the morning press conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trevilla Trejo responded to accusations published by CNN, which reported an increase in US surveillance activities over Mexican cartels in recent weeks.
According to the report, the US government has deployed sophisticated spy planes to carry out at least 18 reconnaissance missions along the southern border and in international airspace near Baja California.

The Secretary of Defense detailed that, so far, two flights have been identified, on January 31 and February 3, both conducted in international space, without any incursion into Mexican territory.
Moreover, he clarified that the Federal Civil Aviation Agency controls civil flights in the country.
While the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) is responsible for authorizing any military air operations in Mexican territory.
So far, he said, they have not received requests from the United States to conduct such flights in Mexico’s airspace.

Trevilla Trejo emphasized that Mexico maintains cooperation agreements with US security forces to share information on combating drug trafficking at the border.
However, he assured that this collaboration must be governed by principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, and respect for national sovereignty.
The issue of aerial surveillance adds to recent measures adopted by Mexico to strengthen border security, including the deployment of 10,000 National Guard agents at the border with the United States.
This action was part of an agreement with the Washington government to avoid the imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican products, after former President Donald Trump designated drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
