The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) assured this Friday that it will always accept the return of Mexican men and women to the country, even in the case of repatriations.

This statement came after NBC News reported that a U.S. military plane carrying deportees was denied permission to land.

«In the case of repatriations, we will always welcome the return of Mexican men and women to our territory with open arms,» the ministry stated.

«Mexico embraces you,» the foreign ministry posted in a brief message on social media.

In the post, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Mexico «has a very good relationship» with the U.S. government.

«And we cooperate with respect for our sovereignties on a wide range of issues, including migration.»

The SRE’s reaction followed a report by NBC News citing two U.S. Department of Defense officials and another individual familiar with the matter.

They claimed that while two C-17 Air Force planes, each carrying about 80 people, departed the U.S. on Thursday night, a third flight destined for Mexico never took off.

Deportations: A Common Practice

NBC News reported that a White House official explained the situation regarding the flight to Mexico as «an administrative matter that was quickly resolved.»

However, since the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump last Monday, relations between the two nations have grown tense.

Particularly after Trump threatened to impose a general 25% tariff on Mexican goods in retaliation for the border crisis.

On Friday, the White House announced that deportations of migrants had «begun,» referring to Trump’s primary campaign promise of carrying out the largest mass expulsion of foreigners in U.S. history.

‘Mexico Embraces You’: The Mexican Response

Nevertheless, deportation flights from the U.S. are not new and occurred regularly during the administration of Democrat Joe Biden (2021-2025).

Between June and December of last year alone, more than 860 repatriation flights took place, according to data released last week by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

It is also known that these flights resulted in the expulsion of over 271,000 individuals from approximately 160 countries.

The Pentagon confirmed in a statement today that military planes have begun to be used for these deportation flights, which are typically conducted on civilian aircraft.

An Uncertain Future for Bilateral Relations

According to specialized media, the plan is to continue using C-130 and C-17 military transport planes to deport 5,400 individuals currently in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

These developments come just days after the presentation of «Mexico Embraces You,» a strategy by the Mexican government aimed at reintegrating deported Mexicans.

This initiative includes promises of employment, social programs, transportation assistance throughout the country, and the ‘Paisano Wellbeing Card,’ which provides 2,000 pesos (approximately $97.60 USD).
