The first non-binary individual obtained legal documentation in Mexico in 2022

In July 2022, JJ Fernando became the first non-binary person to amend their Unique Population Registry Code (CURP).
The CURP is a crucial identification document in Mexico.
Fernando has also obtained their birth certificate and voter ID, the country’s primary form of identification.
This was all reported by the EFE news agency.
An alliance was formed in Mexico

Realizing the lack of official recognition, JJ Fernando created the Non-Binary Alliance Mexico a couple of years ago.
It’s a network where Mexican activists fight to help more people obtain documents with their correct gender identity.
«It’s that legally, we do not exist. I mean, all the basic documents that anyone already has from birth.»
«We just do not exist anywhere,» JJ told EFE.
Mexican activists are demanding national legislation that offers legal protection

Ari Muñoz, National Vice President of LGBT Rights Mexico, uses the pronoun ‘elle’.
They are calling for national legislation that legally protects non-binary individuals.
Muñoz, who has identified as non-binary for the past four years, insists that «legal recognition of identity is a fundamental right.»
That’s because it cascades into other areas of life, such as bank accounts, university degrees and medical care.
Mexico sets a record for the number of non-binary individuals

There are approximately 5 million LGBTI people in Mexico.
This is according to2022 statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). transgender or non-binary.
Some also identify gender fluid.
