Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Tuesday that 14 Mexicans are currently detained at the new ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention center in Florida, United States.

Sheinbaum stated during her press conference that the Mexican government is working to achieve the repatriation of these nationals as soon as possible.

“14 Mexicans are detained, and the government is making every effort to repatriate them immediately,” the president explained, emphasizing that diplomacy is being used to address the situation.

Additionally, Sheinbaum revealed that a diplomatic note was sent to the U.S. government requesting the prompt repatriation.

If any abuses are identified, the Mexican government will follow the necessary protocols to ensure their prompt deportation.

“As soon as it was made public that this detention center existed, we sent another diplomatic note requesting that any Mexican be deported immediately and not have to spend time in this facility,” Sheinbaum said.

The ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention center, inaugurated in early July, was built in record time, according to Efe and CNN.

This new facility is located on the runway of an abandoned airport west of Miami and has the capacity to hold up to 5,000 migrants.

The installation is part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to intensify anti-immigration measures.

The name ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ references the famous San Francisco prison, which President Trump has ordered to be reopened.

Sheinbaum criticized the criminalization of migrants and insisted that the government must address the root causes of migration.

In this context, the Mexican government has continued to push for more humane treatment of migrants, especially Mexicans detained on U.S. soil.

Since Donald Trump took office as U.S. president, the Mexican government has reported the deportation of 73,533 people, of whom 67,008 are Mexican.
