A 27-year-old mother has been accused of murdering her two young daughters.

The woman, identified as Naomi Elkins, now faces serious charges after allegedly stabbing one of them.

She is also accused of drowning both in a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday, June 25.

Shock in New Jersey After Tragedy

The heartbreaking scene unfolded around 4:50 p.m. (local time) when the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to an emergency call.

Medical personnel from Hatzolah, a Jewish ambulance service, were desperately trying to save two children in cardiac arrest.

Despite their tireless efforts, the victims, just 1 and 3 years old, were declared dead at the scene.

Bradley Billhimer, Ocean County Prosecutor, confirmed that Naomi Elkins, the mother of the girls, is accused of stabbing the 1-year-old and drowning both.

Authorities have charged her with two counts of murder, as well as charges for illegal possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

Elkins was detained without bail and remains in the Ocean County Jail while awaiting her court hearing.

Amidst the shock and disbelief that this incident has caused in the community, Mayor Raymond Coles expressed his distress: «It is terrible to know that something like this happened here.»
