During his appearance at the Bosch Connected World event, Elon Musk warned that we are approaching an unprecedented energy crisis.

The rapid expansion of data centers powering AI has created a massive surge in energy demand—one that current grids are not equipped to handle.

Musk stated that we may be facing an electrical collapse that could happen “in months, not years,” as existing infrastructure cannot support the sudden and sustained energy load.

“Once we exceed generation and distribution capacity, collapse becomes inevitable,” Musk told CNBC.

Bill Gates, for his part, highlighted the risks posed by extreme weather events.

Storms, heat waves, and unpredictable phenomena are pushing power grids to their limits—especially in highly interconnected and digitalized systems.

According to Gates, a blackout could begin as a regional outage and spread like a domino effect, paralyzing entire sectors of the global economy.

“Modern grids are fragile because any failure can have large-scale repercussions,” he explained.

Both tech magnates agree that AI, combined with vulnerable energy infrastructure, could trigger a global blackout.

The message is clear:

The world is not prepared for the explosion in demand that emerging technology requires.

So reports Milenio.

What Comes Next

There is an urgent need for investment in energy infrastructure and clean power generation during this new AI era, in order to avoid a possible blackout.

Musk anticipates challenges in energy generation by mid to late 2026.

Gates suggests strengthening regional resilience in electrical grids.
