The North Carolina House of Representatives approved a new redistricting plan on Wednesday that provides a key advantage for the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
With 66 votes in favor and 48 against, the measure redraws the 1st Congressional District, one of the state’s most competitive, significantly reducing the reelection chances of Democrat Don Davis.
This marks the fifth redistricting map adopted in North Carolina in the past five years. Under state law, the map automatically takes effect — no approval from the governor is required.
With the new configuration, Republicans further consolidate their control of the state’s congressional delegation, tightening their grip on a key battleground state in national elections.

Redistricting like the one in North Carolina has become a core political tool for the party, especially in states where Republicans control the legislature.
In 2025, similar maps were approved in Texas, Utah, and Missouri, all designed to secure political advantages in competitive districts.

Democratic Governor Josh Stein reacted sharply to the approval of the new map, saying that if he had the power, he would “veto it immediately.”
He accused Republican leaders of “abusing their power” and acting out of fear of losing ground in the upcoming elections.
“They don’t dare say no to the president,” Stein declared, referring to internal pressure from Donald Trump’s influence within the GOP, according to EFE News Agency.
Despite Stein’s criticism, North Carolina law prevents the governor from blocking redistricting bills, meaning the map will automatically take effect for the next election cycle.
A National Strategy to Secure Congress
The new North Carolina redistricting is part of a broader Republican strategy, led by Donald Trump, to expand congressional representation before the 2026 elections.
Trump has urged GOP-led state legislatures to review and redraw electoral boundaries to maximize Republican seats in key states.
Internal projections suggest the ongoing redistricting efforts could yield up to five additional seats in Texas and one in each of the other participating states, including North Carolina, Utah, and Missouri.
Together, these changes could significantly reshape the political balance in Congress, reinforcing the GOP’s hold on power and setting the stage for a high-stakes 2026 midterm election.
