According to USA TODAY, former President Barack Obama stated on February 14 that some actions by federal agents under President Donald Trump’s administration are comparable to behaviors seen in authoritarian countries.
The remarks were made during an interview with podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen.
Obama said that the “dishonest behavior of federal government agents is deeply concerning and dangerous.”
He added that American citizens should be recognized for engaging in “peaceful protests” and for shedding light on conduct that, he argued, has historically been observed in dictatorships — not in the United States.
These Obama comments on ICE Minnesota quickly fueled renewed national debate.
Obama Criticizes ICE Operations in Minnesota
The statements come after White House border czar Tom Homan announced on February 12 that the administration would scale back the surge of federal immigration agents sent to Minnesota.
In that state, two U.S. citizens — Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti — died in incidents involving federal agents.
The events sparked controversy and protests.
Obama described the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota as “unprecedented.”

According to the former president, agents were deployed to cities without clear directives or adequate training.
Once on the ground, he claimed, they removed people from their homes, used children to provoke their parents, and deployed tear gas against crowds that, he said, were standing without breaking any laws.
White House Response

As protests have grown in several cities in recent months in response to ICE operations, White House officials have defended their immigration record.
Vice President JD Vance rejected accusations that immigration agents used a five-year-old child as bait by instructing the child to knock on a door before arresting the father.
“Are they supposed to let a five-year-old freeze to death?” Vance asked.
He added that if the argument is that individuals who have violated the law cannot be arrested simply because they have children, then all parents would have absolute immunity from law enforcement.
Congressional Negotiations
Political tensions remain high as negotiations continue between congressional Democrats and the White House.
Democrats are seeking to impose new restrictions on federal immigration agents.
The proposal is part of broader discussions tied to funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
Talks are continuing over the weekend amid a political climate shaped by criticism of immigration operations and the administration’s defense of its policies — keeping the spotlight on the impact of Obama’s ICE Minnesota comments nationwide.
