According to a study published in 2024 in The Journal of Nutrition, consuming at least one egg a week could decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by up to 47%, a finding that has caught the attention of health and nutrition experts.

Cardiologist Aurelio Rojas, in a video shared on his social media, explained the results of this research, which involved approximately 1,000 participants with an average age of 81.

“The key ingredient you need to understand—because many people eat eggs thinking the yolk is harmful and only eat the white—is that you need to include the yolk,” Rojas warned in his message.

Additionally, the specialist emphasized that the egg yolk contains choline, an essential nutrient for brain health that’s often avoided due to concerns about cholesterol content, as reported by El Heraldo de México.

Choline and Its Role in Brain Health

Cardiologist Aurelio Rojas highlighted in his message that choline is a crucial compound for proper brain function, involved in key processes like memory and learning.

“The egg yolk is extremely beneficial for your health because it provides the highest concentration of choline, a nutrient that plays a crucial role in cognitive functions such as memory and learning. Adequate intake could have protective effects against neurodegenerative diseases,” the specialist explained.

Moreover, choline is essential for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that enables communication between brain cells and is often affected in individuals with Alzheimer’s.

In addition to this study, Rojas cited another investigation supported by the UK Biobank, which found that moderate choline consumption is associated with a 23% reduction in the risk of developing any form of dementia.

A Simple and Practical Recommendation

The cardiologist’s advice has been well received by many people looking for simple and accessible preventive strategies to protect their brain health as they age.

“New independent studies suggest that simply using choline can reduce the risk of dementia, so make sure to include the yolk and have at least one egg a week if you want to stay healthy,” Rojas recommended at the end of his message.

This suggestion goes against the popular trend of avoiding egg yolks in low-cholesterol diets, emphasizing that the brain health benefits may far outweigh concerns about fat content when consumed in moderation.

Nutrition specialists agree that including eggs in a weekly diet is a practical and affordable measure that, combined with other healthy habits, can help strengthen cognitive health.
