A coalition of pro-immigrant organizations has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.

The legal action seeks to halt a rule mandating that millions of undocumented immigrants register with the government.

The measure would also require migrants to carry proof of registration at all times.

Failure to comply could result in fines or even jail time.

The administration claims the rule is designed to encourage undocumented individuals to self-deport.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) is leading the legal challenge.

CHIRLA Executive Director Angélica Salas condemned the measure as a form of mass immigration raid.

The lawsuit argues that the Department of Homeland Security violated procedural requirements.

According to the plaintiffs, the rule should have gone through a public comment period.

They also claim the rule is vague and could lead to legal confusion.

Advocates warn that the policy does not clarify how it applies to TPS and DACA recipients.

There is concern the registry could be enforced arbitrarily or used abusively.

“America is not a ‘papers-please’ country,” said Michelle Lapointe of the American Immigration Council.

The law on which the rule is based was originally passed during World War II.

In addition to CHIRLA, the plaintiffs include United Farm Workers (UFW), CASA, and Make the Road New York.
