The defeat of Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez against Terence Crawford in Las Vegas marked not only a turning point in his professional career.

It also reignited an ongoing feud: Óscar de la Hoya’s rivalry with the Mexican champion.

The former boxer and now promoter wasted no time in attacking his former protégé, with whom he worked for more than a decade before ending on bitter terms.

Just hours after the fight, De la Hoya posted a video on Instagram mocking the fighter from Guadalajara, showing that resentment still lingers.

In the video, Óscar de la Hoya appears wearing a shirt with the phrase “Eat More Meat,” a direct jab at the controversy that haunted Canelo in 2018, when he tested positive for clenbuterol and attributed the result to contaminated meat in Mexico.

Beyond the clothing, the former world champion delivered harsh words:

“I told you idiots… What did you just see? I only speak the truth,” he said, referencing the outcome of the fight, in which Álvarez lost by unanimous decision to Crawford.

The tone of his message made it clear that the personal rivalry continues and that De la Hoya views Álvarez’s defeat as validation of his past criticisms.

A broken bond for years

The relationship between them began as a professional alliance lasting more than a decade, when Canelo signed with Golden Boy Promotions, De la Hoya’s company. Under that contract, the fighter from Jalisco became a global boxing superstar.

But everything changed in 2020.

After legal disputes and personal differences, Canelo broke away from Golden Boy and continued independently, becoming one of the most influential and highest-paid boxers in the world.

Since then, public barbs have been constant.

De la Hoya has repeatedly criticized the Mexican’s team decisions, choice of rivals, and even his fighting style.

Canelo Álvarez, in turn, has accused his former promoter of failing to honor agreements and of exploiting fighters under his banner.

The recent loss in the Canelo Álvarez vs Terence Crawford bout has given De la Hoya new ammunition to push his criticism.

With just a sarcastic remark, the ex-champion managed to intensify a rivalry that seems increasingly unlikely to see reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Álvarez faces a period of reflection after losing his undisputed super middleweight title.

In contrast, his former promoter appears pleased, eager to use Álvarez’s stumble as a reminder of the unresolved conflicts between them.

What is clear is that the relationship between Óscar de la Hoya and Saúl Álvarez remains tense, and every new defeat for the fighter from Guadalajara becomes fertile ground to rekindle their public clash.
