  • Reported by USA TODAY
  • Here are the details

On Sunday, a missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck near Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, sparking widespread concern among passengers inside the terminal.

The explosion, which sent a column of smoke into the air, occurred around 2:10 p.m. and caused panic at the airport, which is located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

According to Israeli authorities, the missile landed near a road adjacent to the Terminal 3 parking lot, creating a large crater but causing no significant material damage.

Israeli police spokesperson Yair Hetzroni showed reporters the crater left by the impact, describing it as several meters wide and deep.

Despite the crater’s size, no major damage was reported to the airport’s facilities. Still, passengers responded immediately to the alert sirens, rushing into the airport’s designated safe rooms.

The missile was launched by the Houthis, a rebel group aligned with Iran that has intensified attacks on Israel in recent months. The attack comes amid growing regional tensions, with the Houthis declaring their support for Palestinians in Gaza and vowing to continue targeting Israeli sites.

In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that any aggression against the country would carry severe consequences.

Israel’s missile defense system, which has successfully intercepted most missiles launched from Yemen, failed to stop this particular projectile.

Despite the alarms, the Ben Gurion International airport resumed operations shortly after the incident, though some flights, including those by Air India and Lufthansa, were canceled or delayed.

The incident also caused temporary disruption to access routes around the airport.

Eight people were taken to the hospital, including one man with leg injuries and two women with minor head wounds. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The attack also triggered renewed sirens in Tel Aviv, adding to the chaos in the city.

This attack coincides with an escalating Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths. It also occurs amid ongoing U.S. efforts to diminish the Houthis’ capabilities.

The attacks continue as part of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas assaults killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages.

The U.S. Department of Defense has increased airstrikes against the Houthis in an attempt to weaken their missile-launching capacity and deter future attacks.

Tensions remain high, and the international community is closely monitoring developments in this dangerous escalation of violence.
