Pope Francis suffered two new episodes of acute respiratory distress on Monday and was once again placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican confirmed.

The Pope had inhaled significant amounts of mucus, marking yet another setback in his two-week battle against a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia.

In a late update, the Vatican stated that these episodes were caused by a «significant accumulation» of mucus in his lungs and bronchial spasms.

«Two bronchoscopies were performed to aspirate large secretions,» the Vatican reported.

Despite the complications, Pope Francis remained alert, oriented, and cooperative with the medical staff. However, his prognosis remains guarded.

Earlier on Monday, Pope Francis issued a new message from the hospital.

Meanwhile, Vatican officials urged him to let his voice be heard after he had been absent from the public eye for over two weeks while recovering.

Francis, 88 years old, criticized the «progressive irrelevance» of international organizations in addressing global conflicts.

This statement came while Pope Francis remained hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital in stable condition.

He woke up, had breakfast, and received treatment after sleeping “well throughout the night,” the Vatican reported.

The Vatican has not released any photos or videos of Francis since before his hospitalization on February 14 for a complex lung infection—marking the longest public absence in his 12-year papacy.

The Vatican has provided only brief medical updates twice a day regarding his condition.

Pope Francis has begun signing documents with the note «From the Gemelli Polyclinic,» signaling that he remains active and working.

The Vatican has defended Francis’ decision to recover in peace and out of the public eye.

However, on Monday, one of Francis’ closest friends in the Vatican, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, urged him to speak out, stating that the world needs to hear his voice.

«We need men like him who are truly universal and not just unilateral,» Paglia said during a press conference.

This statement was made while launching the annual assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Vatican’s bioethics institution, whose theme this year is «The End of the World?»

In a message dated February 26, Pope Francis lamented that international organizations are becoming increasingly ineffective—particularly in combating the global threats humanity faces.

He criticized their weakening influence due to «short-sighted attitudes driven by the protection of particular and national interests.»

Francis has also repeatedly called for peace between Russia and Ukraine while trying to maintain the Vatican’s traditional diplomatic neutrality.

Similarly, he has sought a delicate balance regarding Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

Even Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, a Vatican diplomat not particularly close to Francis, acknowledged the urgency of hearing his voice at a time when war is ravaging Europe.

«Pope Francis’ voice is of vital importance to the entire world because he is the only authority speaking of peace, condemning war—all ongoing wars, starting with Ukraine,» Gaenswein told La Repubblica.

Francis’ 17-night hospitalization still falls short of the record set by Saint John Paul II, who endured multiple prolonged hospital stays over his 25-year papacy.
