On Thursday afternoon, authorities in Emerson spent several hours cleaning up the scene of an accident that occurred when a train collided with a truck carrying hot liquid asphalt that had become stuck on the tracks.
The incident took place around 1:14 p.m. at the railroad crossing on Highway 293 and Gaston Westbrook Avenue, just across the street from Emerson City Hall.
According to the Bartow County Fire and Emergency Services, the crash resulted in only a small spill of non-flammable liquid asphalt.
Fortunately, there were no injuries among those involved in the incident.

Floyd Muncy, a driver from West Virginia, was identified by Emerson Police as the person responsible for the truck. Muncy was outside the vehicle at the time of the crash and was not injured.
There were also no injuries reported among the train passengers, according to a spokesperson for CSX.
Authorities stated that Muncy was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device and for not adhering to restrictions at the railroad crossing.
These details emerged following a swift response by Emerson Police.

In the report from Emerson Police, it was noted that the responding officer immediately contacted 911 to alert CSX about the situation and stop any oncoming trains.
Just three minutes after officers arrived, the northbound train struck the passenger side of the truck’s cab.
The impact was significant, but thankfully no one was hurt.
However, the crash triggered a large-scale deployment of resources to ensure the tracks were cleared and that the spilled asphalt did not pose a greater risk.
Investigation Continues
Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the accident, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
In the meantime, rail traffic in the area has resumed. But the incident has underscored the ongoing importance of safety at railroad crossings to prevent future accidents.
