Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump, has shocked public opinion by offering himself as a hostage to Hamas in a letter written from prison.

The defendant, currently held in a federal prison in Miami, stated in a two-page letter that he is willing to surrender in Gaza «to restart the peace conversation.»

His daughter, Sara Routh, confirmed the authenticity of the document to the New York Post.

In the letter, Routh expresses his admiration for Alexander Hamilton and proposes that he and other «good Samaritans» be exchanged for Israeli hostages in an effort to help end the armed conflict.

The trial against Routh is scheduled for September 8, after Judge Aileen Cannon rejected a defense request to postpone it until December.

Routh faces five charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and possession of a firearm to commit a violent crime.

He was arrested on September 15 at a Florida golf course owned by Trump. According to reports from EFE, Secret Service agents discovered him armed with a semi-automatic rifle hidden in nearby shrubs. After fleeing the scene, he was arrested later that same day.

Routh’s legal team is reportedly exploring the possibility of an insanity defense and must present supporting documentation in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, his unusual offer to be taken as a hostage has sparked a wide range of reactions in both political and legal circles.
