Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, agreed on Tuesday, June 17, to intensify economic cooperation between their two countries during a bilateral meeting held at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

“Economic integration between Mexico and Canada has benefited workers and businesses in both nations,” the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office stated in an official release.

The meeting took place amid rising international tensions.

But the leaders used the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to trade based on clear and sustainable rules.

During the meeting at the G7 summit, Sheinbaum gifted Carney a commemorative soccer ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ball was crafted by Wixárika artisans, symbolizing Mexican Indigenous culture.

The gesture was interpreted as an act of cultural diplomacy and a joint regional projection ahead of the sporting event.

Claudia Sheinbaum and Mark Carney discussed the scheduled 2026 review of the USMCA and stressed the importance of preserving North America’s competitiveness.

Their intention to strengthen the common economic framework aims to consolidate shared value chains and jointly face global challenges such as climate change and the energy transition.

“They underscored the importance of protecting North America’s competitiveness and rule-based trade,” the Canadian statement said.

What’s Next

Carney and Sheinbaum expressed their intention to hold a follow-up meeting in Mexico in the coming months.

This could pave the way for more ambitious agreements in innovation, sustainability, and digital trade.

President Sheinbaum had also planned to meet with Donald Trump during the summit.

However, the meeting was canceled due to the U.S. president’s early return to Washington, following the escalation of the Israel–Iran conflict.
