Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that on March 9, she will present tariff and non-tariff measures against the United States.
This comes in response to Washington’s 25% tariffs on Mexican products.
Sheinbaum described the White House’s statement as «offensive, defamatory, and baseless» regarding Mexico’s government.
Although she did not provide details on the countermeasures, she strongly rejected the decision of Mexico’s largest trading partner.
Sheinbaum Warns of Negative Impact of Tariffs on Both Nations
She warned that these tariffs will have harmful effects on both countries.
«It is inconceivable that they do not consider the damage that will be caused to both U.S. citizens and businesses due to higher prices on products made in our country, as well as the harm that will come from stalling job creation in both nations,» she stated.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum criticized President Donald Trump’s decision.
She noted that since February 3, when the 30-day pause on tariffs began, Mexico has taken «strong actions» against organized crime and fentanyl trafficking.
Sheinbaum responded to Trump’s claim that Mexico’s efforts are «not enough» to stop drug trafficking.
She will announce the government’s countermeasures on Sunday at noon in Mexico City’s Zócalo.

Sheinbaum emphasized that since taking office on October 1, 2024, her administration has worked on improving security and combating fentanyl trafficking.
She cited U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, showing that from October 2024 to January 2025, fentanyl seizures from Mexico decreased by 50%.
In the first five months of her presidency, Mexico has:
Seized 1,998 firearms, 75% of them originating from the U.S..
Confiscated 121.4 tons of drugs, including 1,260 kg and over 1.3 million fentanyl pills.
Dismantled 329 clandestine drug labs and seized 26.4 tons of cocaine.
Arrested 13,858 people for high-impact crimes.
Sheinbaum Defends Sovereignty and Rejects Unjustified Tariffs

Sheinbaum highlighted the recent extradition of 29 drug traffickers, including Rafael Caro Quintero and leaders of Los Zetas.
«For this reason, we emphasize: there is no justification, reason, or basis for this decision, which will harm our peoples and nations,» she stated.
She reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to cooperation but rejected «subordination and interventionism.»
Sheinbaum lamented that with these new tariffs, «no one wins.»
