- Twelve states sue Trump over tariffs
- Trump imposes global tariffs
- Attorneys general call the measures illegal
A coalition of twelve states, led by the attorneys general of Oregon and Arizona, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump for what they claim are “illegal” tariffs.
The lawsuit was submitted on Wednesday to the United States Court of International Trade (CIT).
It directly challenges four executive orders signed by Trump that authorize the imposition of global tariffs without Congressional approval.
According to the plaintiffs, these actions violate the Constitution and exceed the powers of the Executive Branch.

The suit aims to block 145% tariffs on most Chinese products and 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.
These countries are key trade partners for the states included in the coalition.

The attorneys general also seek to halt a 10% tariff on all other global imports.
They additionally oppose Trump’s plan to extend tariffs to products from another 46 countries starting July 9.
“These tariffs affect every aspect of our lives,” said Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield in a statement.
Rayfield stated that his state will not “stand idly by” in the face of what he considers an unfair economic war.
Meanwhile, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes called the plan “reckless,” warning that it is “economically unsound and illegal.”
Both attorneys general agree that the tariffs will severely impact local economies and hurt consumers’ wallets.

They cited economic studies showing that 95% of the cost of tariffs imposed between 2017 and 2021 was borne by Americans.
Not by China or other countries, but by consumers and businesses within the United States.
The Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have also warned that these measures fuel inflation.
According to these institutions, a widespread increase in tariffs will damage supply chains and raise the cost of living.
Nevada, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, and Vermont also joined the lawsuit against Trump.
All share a common concern: the negative effects these tariffs may have on local industries.
Especially in sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, and technology, which rely on stable imports and exports.
California also challenges the tariffs

California previously filed a similar lawsuit last week.
The state argued that Trump’s tariffs are illegal and directly harm its economy.
This growing legal front reflects broad opposition among states to the president’s unilateral trade policies.
The plaintiffs argue that Congress must have the final say in decisions as significant as the imposition of global tariffs.
They fear that allowing this precedent would give too much unchecked power to the Executive Branch.
