Although many people associate colds with colder months, this virus can strike at any time of the year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults in the United States catch a cold two to three times per year. Children tend to get sick even more frequently.

While there’s still no cure for the common cold—and antibiotics won’t help—certain supplements may ease symptoms, reduce how long you’re sick, or even help prevent catching a cold in the first place.

Here are seven over-the-counter supplements that research suggests might be helpful:

1. Elderberry

Elderberry is a popular supplement during cold and flu season.

Studies suggest elderberry may help reduce the duration of flu symptoms, though it doesn’t prevent illness entirely or relieve all symptoms.

Thanks to its antibacterial and antiviral properties, elderberry has been shown to help people recover faster once they’re already sick with a cold or the flu.

2. Zinc

Zinc is well known for potentially shortening the duration of colds.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), it should be taken orally and with caution.

While zinc can be effective if taken at the first sign of symptoms, intranasal zinc (sprays or gels) can be dangerous and has been linked to loss of the sense of smell.

Additionally, zinc may interact with antibiotics and other medications, so it’s wise to consult a doctor before using it.

3. Echinacea

Research on echinacea is mixed, but some studies suggest this supplement might not only reduce the chance of getting sick but could also help shorten the duration of a cold.

Though generally safe for most people, echinacea can cause allergic reactions in some, so caution is advised.

4. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is famous for supporting the immune system. Although its impact on preventing colds is modest, studies show it may reduce the severity of symptoms for those already sick.

However, it’s important not to exceed the recommended dose, as too much vitamin C can cause digestive discomfort.

Pelargonium, a traditional African herb, has shown promising results for easing cold symptoms, according to CNET.

One study found that the sooner pelargonium was taken after the first signs of illness, the more likely it was to shorten the duration of a cold.

6. Andrographis

Andrographis, native to South Asia, is another herbal option that may help ease cold symptoms.

Studies suggest this herb, especially when combined with ginseng, can reduce the severity of a cold.

Possible side effects include gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and vomiting, so it should be used cautiously.

7. Vitamin D

Best known for its role in bone health, vitamin D also helps support immune function.

Some research suggests that vitamin D supplements might help fight the common cold and help you recover more quickly.

In addition, vitamin D may be beneficial in preventing respiratory infections, which often accompany cold and flu season.
