The Origin of the Scandal

The incident took place when two drag queen artists were interviewing people in public to hear their opinions on various topics, a dynamic that usually attracts thousands of followers on social media.

During this activity, they approached a man from Syria who currently resides in Mexico. When asked directly if he liked the country, he answered seriously and without hesitation:

“No.” When pressed further and warned that he might face criticism online, the man doubled down and firmly stated: “No, I hate Mexico.”

This bold statement became the trigger for the Syrian man controversy in Mexico.

The response generated immediate backlash among internet users, who quickly voiced their outrage with all kinds of messages. Among the circulating comments were:

“Impressive; you can see the lack of tolerance for those who don’t think like the majority. If that’s what he thinks, that’s on him, but we should respect it because his opinion counts just like anyone else’s… Mexico is a great country, Mexico is free, and it should remain so. Freedom of expression applies whether one is Mexican or not… we must respect each other.”

“Let him leave, it’s that simple.”

“I think he was just joking with them.”

“Well done, get the Syrian out for being arrogant.”

The reactions showed both sides of the Syrian man controversy in Mexico: some defended his right to express himself, while others called him ungrateful and demanded his immediate departure from the country.

The controversy escalated further when it was revealed that the man worked at a bar called La Vieja Habana.

Once the establishment learned about the situation, they decided to dismiss him immediately.

On social media, they posted a strong message:

“We already fired the Syrian,” making it clear that they would not tolerate insults against Mexico. The business’s stance was celebrated by many, who applauded their defense of national pride.

Later, the bar expanded on its position:

“In recent days, a former employee made statements in external media that have generated comments about our company. We want to make it clear that these opinions are strictly personal and in no way reflect the ideals or values of La Vieja Habana.”

The statement closed by reaffirming their identity:

“We are a proudly Mexican company, committed to Mexico, its culture, and its people. We reiterate our respect and gratitude to those who have given us their trust and support. Long live Mexico!”

This business reaction further intensified the Syrian man controversy in Mexico, with many applauding their decision while others argued it went too far.

What Remains After the Controversy

The case opened a broader debate about the limits of freedom of expression and the responsibility of those who migrate to other countries.

While some believe the reaction was excessive, others see the dismissal as a show of national solidarity against offensive statements.

The Syrian man controversy in Mexico has left many questioning: was the bar’s decision to fire him fair, or was it an overreaction to a personal opinion?
