According to EFE, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has launched a controversial tax exemption program to encourage gun purchases during the last four months of the year.
The announcement was made on Monday at an event about tax incentives for school supplies.
DeSantis, a Republican and staunch supporter of gun rights, dubbed the measure the “Second Amendment Tax Holiday.”
During this special period, from September 8 to December 31, 2024, the state will not charge sales tax on firearms, ammunition, or related equipment.

This includes handguns, rifles, gear, bows, arrows, and other hunting or personal defense accessories.
“That’s going to save some folks a lot of money,” the governor said during the press conference.
Florida thus becomes one of the first states in the country to implement this type of tax incentive tied to the constitutional right to bear arms.
The state ranks second nationwide in gun sales, according to a recent report from Safe Home.
Economic Impact and Public Reaction

The organization, using FBI data, estimates that 1.22 million guns were sold in Florida in 2024.
However, this figure represents a 7% drop compared to sales recorded in 2023.
More than one-third of the state’s residents own at least one firearm, according to data from the Ammo association.
Florida also has one of the most permissive gun laws in the country.
DeSantis Defends “Freedom” Through Tax Cuts

A current law allows the carrying of concealed weapons without the need for a license or special permit.
These measures have been defended by the state government as part of a policy of “freedom” and “public safety.”
“By cutting taxes, empowering parents, and growing our economy, we are making it easier for people to live, work, and thrive in the free state of Florida,” DeSantis argued.
The gun tax exemption was announced alongside a tax package that includes benefits for school supply purchases.
Political Debate Over Guns in Florida
These items will also be tax-free during August as part of the back-to-school period.
The initiative has sparked mixed reactions among political and social groups in the state.
While conservative organizations celebrate the measure as a defense of gun rights, gun control groups have voiced concerns.
Activists argue that the measure could encourage mass gun purchases without proper evaluation of the social risks.
Second Amendment and Growing Social Tensions
Florida has been the scene of mass shootings that shocked the country, such as the 2018 tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
In this context, critics argue that these measures go against common sense and public safety.
The debate over gun control remains one of the most polarizing issues in U.S. politics.
With this new tax incentive, Florida reinforces its position as one of the most gun-friendly states in the nation.
