Members of an armed group attempted to stop them, but the driver tried to escape, which led to the SUV overturning off the road.
Additionally, the criminals robbed the women of their belongings.
It wasn’t long before the police arrived at the scene.
Authorities confronted the criminals, however, there are no arrests following the deaths of these tourists.
Both the SUV and the bodies of the victims were transferred to the city of Sonoyta, in Sonora.
More information is expected to be revealed in the coming hours.
According to information from La Verdad, the women were not actually American tourists.
Instead, Enedina “N”, aged 72, and Ubaldina “N”, aged 82, were returning to Caborca from Arizona, USA, when they were ambushed.
One theory suggests that this attack stems from the ongoing cartel war in this region.
Hours later, military personnel found an SUV with a reported theft which was apparently abandoned by those responsible for the armed attack.
