Conmebol officially canceled the match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile due to extreme violence at the Estadio Libertadores de América.

The decision was taken after serious riots that left more than 10 people critically injured, in addition to a stampede inside and outside the stadium.

Official Conmebol Statement

The Competitions Directorate reported that despite activating the Club Manual’s security protocols, the safety of players and fans could not be guaranteed.

“The case will be referred to Conmebol’s Judicial Bodies,” the organization announced.
All documentation will be sent to the Disciplinary Commission to determine sanctions.

The chaos began in the visitors’ section with fires, stun bomb explosions, and attacks with bottles and projectiles.

Independiente’s barras bravas entered armed with bats, knives, and iron rods, unleashing a massive brawl. Reports indicated falls from height and people knocked unconscious by blows.

Brutal Scenes and Failed Response

Videos showed fans bleeding on the pitch and fleeing in panic. Despite 800 security officers on site, the response was inadequate and disorganized.

Authorities confirmed that 300 people were arrested, most of them Universidad de Chile supporters.
