US President Donald Trump has approved preliminary plans for an attack on Iran, according to reports from media outlets such as CBS News and The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, June 19, citing intelligence and Defense Department sources.

Although the president has reportedly given the green light to join Israel’s air campaign, he has not yet issued a final order to launch the attack.

According to WSJ, Trump told his advisers he would delay the final decision if Tehran agrees to abandon its nuclear program.

“I have ideas on what to do, but I haven’t made a final decision because things change,” Trump said from the Oval Office.

CBS News cited an intelligence source who confirmed that Trump formally approved a plan to provide air support to Israel.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House is keeping “multiple options on the table” while the president observes Israel’s actions.

On Truth Social, Trump responded:

“The Wall Street Journal has no idea what my thoughts are on Iran!”

Context

Trump abruptly left the G7 summit on Monday to return to Washington and meet with his National Security Council.

The escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict has put the entire region on high alert, with reciprocal bombings and direct threats.

On Tuesday, Trump publicly demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and warned that he knows the whereabouts of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, whom he threatened to kill, though he clarified that he has not yet given that order.

“Maybe I will. Maybe I won’t. No one knows what I’m going to do,” the president told the press.

Why It Matters

A direct US military intervention in Iran would mark a drastic shift in foreign policy and could trigger a major regional war.

Trump’s ambiguity keeps the world on edge.
