U.S. President Donald Trump declared this Sunday that he is open to defending Poland and the Baltic states if Russia escalates its military incursions in the region.
The comment came amid growing tensions after three Russian MIG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for twelve minutes last Friday, an action repelled by NATO aircraft in the area.
During his trip to the funeral of ultraconservative activist Charlie Kirk, a journalist asked Trump if he would help defend these countries if Russia continued intensifying its actions.
The president’s response was clear: “Yes, I would, I would.”

The incident with the MIG-31s was not isolated. A week earlier, Russian drones entered Polish airspace, and two weeks ago, another drone entered Romanian airspace.
These episodes have raised alarm in the region due to the risk of military escalation, according to the EFE agency.

Trump said he was aware of what happened in Estonia and expressed his displeasure with Moscow. “We don’t like it,” he said regarding the new airspace violation.
In response, Estonia decided to invoke NATO’s Article 4, which allows member states to call consultations when their territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened.

The move underscores Tallinn’s concern over Russian incursions and the need to strengthen deterrence on Europe’s eastern flank.
At the same time, Poland reported that two Russian fighter jets flew at low altitude over the Baltic Sea near the Petrobaltic oil extraction platform, violating the established security zone.
The Polish Border Guard confirmed the maneuver as a new provocation.
Security Council Addresses the Crisis
These Russian movements occur in a broader context of tension with NATO and recall previous episodes of military pressure in the Baltic.
As a result of the incident, Estonia requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, to be held this Monday in New York, aimed at addressing the violation of its airspace.
The international meeting is expected to mark a new chapter of diplomatic pressure on Russia and a key moment to assess the international community’s response to its actions in the region.
