U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he was not surprised by Elon Musk’s decision to scale back his involvement with the federal government.

“We expected him to do this around this time,” the president said from the Oval Office when asked about the entrepreneur’s future role in his administration.

Musk’s announcement came the previous day, when he confirmed that starting in May, he would work “one or two days” a week with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The agency he leads aims to combat waste and fraud in the federal government.

The decision followed Tesla’s report of a 71% drop in net profits in the first quarter of the year.

Revenue fell to $409 million, a troubling figure that has prompted Musk to refocus his priorities.

Despite stepping back, Musk emphasized that DOGE has already completed much of its initial work.

“I’ll continue one or two days a week as long as the president wants me to and as long as it’s useful,” he stated.

Trump, for his part, defended Musk’s work, stating that thanks to him, the government has managed to save “a lot of money.”

He also expressed regret over the numerous protests Tesla has faced in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Germany, arguing that Musk has been “treated very unfairly” for his role in DOGE.

These protests have intensified following thousands of federal employee layoffs carried out by the department.

Although Trump has not yet spoken directly with Musk about his decision, he confirmed that he plans to do so soon.
