U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday — without evidence — that there was “fraud” in California’s referendum on the redistribution of electoral districts, one of the most closely watched votes of the election day.
Simultaneously, local elections were held in several U.S. cities, including New York, where voters selected new mayors and council members.
Although the day focused on state and municipal issues, the president’s statements gave it a national political dimension.

Trump used his social media platform, Truth Social, to allege that California’s voting process was “rigged from the start” and that Republicans had been “excluded” from mail-in voting — a method he often describes as central to supposed irregularities.

“The unconstitutional vote on redistricting in California is a MASSIVE FRAUD because the entire process, particularly the voting itself, is RIGGED,” Trump wrote in his post.
The president — who in 2020 made similar unproven claims of voter fraud after losing to Joe Biden — adopted the same tone again, warning that the vote was “under intense legal and criminal investigation.”
He did not, however, specify which entity was conducting such an investigation or provide documents or witnesses to substantiate his statements.
The remarks come as Proposition 50, promoted by California’s Democratic governor, seeks a temporary redrawing of electoral districts to reflect population and demographic shifts.
According to state officials, the measure aims to balance political representation, though Republicans argue it favors the Democratic Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

If approved, Proposition 50 could directly influence the composition of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026, strengthening Democratic control in several key districts and reducing Republican influence.
This initiative is seen as a response to redistricting in Texas, where Republican lawmakers redrew electoral maps to favor their party — a move that triggered a new nationwide debate on gerrymandering and political manipulation of voting districts.
California — the nation’s most populous and solidly Democratic state — remains a flashpoint in the debate over voting rights, representation, and state-level political strategy.
Experts suggest that the outcome of Proposition 50 could set a precedent for how far state governments may go in reshaping electoral boundaries for partisan advantage.
Trump’s fraud accusations add a new layer of political confrontation, deepening the divide between the White House and Democratic state administrations and underscoring how disputes over redistricting are shaping the national balance of power ahead of 2026.
The controversy surrounding the Trump fraud claims in the California referendum highlights how election integrity debates continue to dominate the American political landscape — even in traditionally Democratic strongholds like California.
