White House officials confirmed Tuesday that a plan to impose 20% tariffs on most imports remains under consideration.

According to outlets like The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, this is one of the proposals President Donald Trump may announce on Wednesday, April 2.

The date has been dubbed “Liberation Day” by the president, raising expectations for a major economic announcement.

One of the options presented to Trump includes implementing 20% tariffs almost at his discretion.

This would mark a significant shift, as just a day earlier Trump insisted he wouldn’t take an overly aggressive tariff approach.

However, the potential for sweeping tariffs has alarmed analysts and U.S. trade partners.

“We’ll be very generous compared to what other countries do,” Trump said Monday at the White House.

The president stated he has already chosen a trade plan, though he did not provide details.

Nevertheless, the cited media outlets report that Trump has yet to make a final decision and is still in discussions with his advisors.

On Tuesday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is expected to present a key report to the president.

The report outlines trade and tax barriers—such as the European VAT—that impact American products abroad.

Based on that analysis, the goal would be to impose equivalent tariffs on foreign goods and services entering the US.

The strategy, according to Trump, is meant to level the playing field in international trade.

In addition, 25% tariffs on all imported vehicles are expected to go into effect Wednesday.

However, to ease the impact on countries like South Korea, Japan, and Germany, certain exceptions will be included.

Auto parts manufactured in Mexico and Canada will be temporarily exempt from the new duty.

This move could help prevent immediate tensions with key North American automotive trade partners.

Still, the measure represents a major escalation in the Trump administration’s protectionist trade policies.

The official announcement scheduled for Wednesday could redefine the dynamics of the trade war Washington has ramped up in recent years.
