Donald Trump’s lawyers have requested a New York judge to lift the gag order that prevents the former president from commenting on witnesses, jurors, and others involved in his criminal case.
On Tuesday, lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove sent a letter to Judge Juan M. Merchan requesting the end of this restriction.
They argue there is no justification for «ongoing restrictions on President Trump’s First Amendment rights» following the end of the trial.
They emphasize that Trump has the right to an «unrestricted campaign defense» in response to public comments made by President Joe Biden about the verdict.

They also mention ongoing criticisms from his former lawyer Michael Cohen and porn actor Stormy Daniels, key witnesses in the prosecution.
The lawyers insist that lifting the order will allow Trump to fully address the case at the first presidential debate on June 27, according to The Associated Press.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office declined to comment. Merchan issued Trump’s gag order on March 26, a few weeks before the trial began.
After prosecutors expressed concern about the Republican presidential candidate’s propensity to attack people involved in his cases.
Merchan later expanded it to prohibit comments about his own family after the former president posted on social media attacking the judge’s daughter, a Democratic political consultant.
Comments about Merchan and District Attorney Alvin Bragg are allowed, but the gag order prohibits statements about the court staff and members of Bragg’s prosecution team.
Donald Trump was found guilty on Thursday of 34 counts of falsifying business records stemming from what prosecutors said was an attempt to cover up a payment to Daniels to keep her silent just before the 2016 elections.
She claims to have had a sexual encounter with Trump a decade earlier, which he denies. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
