According to EFE, US President Donald Trump issued a message on Monday addressed to American Catholics to commemorate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most significant Marian celebrations in the Catholic Church, highlighting its historical relevance in the country.

In a statement released by the White House, the administration noted that this Marian devotion has held an important place since the early years of US independence, as she has been considered the nation’s patroness.

The presidential message emphasized that the celebration has a special presence in New Orleans, where each January 8 the city commemorates the belief that the Immaculate intervened to save it during the 1815 battle against British forces.

The White House added that this date offers an opportunity to reflect on the continuity of religious traditions that have accompanied generations of Catholics in the United States.

The statement also referenced another central figure for millions of believers: Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose feast is celebrated every December 12 in both the United States and Mexico, and which has become one of the most significant Marian events in the Americas.

The message noted that these celebrations take on even greater meaning as the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence approaches, a context in which the Presidency highlighted the importance of religious symbols for large segments of the population.

The declaration asserted that for many believers, these festivities represent sources of peace, hope, and love—values the White House considers essential within the nation’s social fabric.

Although Trump is not Catholic, his message reinforces his political alignment with conservative Catholic movements that have supported parts of his agenda on social and cultural issues.

Even so, his relationship with the Catholic hierarchy has not always been harmonious, especially given the critical stance of US bishops toward his immigration policies, one of the most contentious aspects of his administration.

Catholic figures within his administration are notable, allowing certain religious sensibilities to have direct representation in political and communication decisions.

Among the most visible members of his team are Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, all of whom are Catholic and maintain ties with organizations and communities of this tradition.

The issuance of this message contrasts with the practice of former president Joe Biden, a practicing Catholic, who sometimes attended Mass for the feast but did not typically release official statements on these dates.

The difference in communication styles reveals how each administration has approached the relationship between religion and politics from distinct perspectives, reflecting the priorities and strategies of their electoral bases.

Under the current administration, the White House has sought to highlight the historical value of Marian figures within the cultural development of the nation—a narrative aimed at connecting with religious sectors that have provided significant support to the president.

The message is also framed in a context of high social and political mobilization, in which the administration seeks to reinforce communications that appeal to national identity and longstanding shared traditions.

The simultaneous reference to the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe reflects recognition of the diversity within US Catholicism, where communities from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds coexist.

Marian celebrations and national projection

Both festivities, although different in their history and meaning, inspire deep devotional practices among millions of believers who find in these dates moments of unity and spiritual reaffirmation.

The presidential message emphasized that the approaching 250th anniversary of independence is an opportunity to reflect on the role that religious beliefs have played in shaping the country throughout its history.

The communication issued by the White House seeks to position these celebrations within a broader narrative linking tradition, identity, and national vision.

Reaction to the statement continues to develop, but its release confirms the administration’s intention to maintain an active presence in matters that mobilize influential religious communities within the US political landscape.
