U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that a preliminary agreement had been reached with NATO regarding Greenland, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump stated that the understanding would benefit the United States and all member countries of the Atlantic Alliance, according to a public message he shared.

As part of the announcement, Trump suspended the threat of imposing tariffs starting February 1 on several European countries involved in military maneuvers on the island.

Trump reported that his meeting with Mark Rutte made it possible to establish a framework for a future agreement related to Greenland and the broader Arctic region.

He said the proposed solution would be positive for both the United States and NATO member countries if finalized.

The announcement was shared directly by the president on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he emphasized the productive nature of the meeting.

Trump avoided detailing the specific terms of the agreement but insisted that it represents a far-reaching understanding.

He noted that this framework for cooperation could have lasting effects on relations between the United States and the Atlantic Alliance.

The Republican leader said that, if implemented, the agreement would benefit the entire region involved and strengthen collaboration among allies under the Trump NATO Greenland agreement.

Tariffs Suspended and Negotiations Ongoing

The president explained that, based on this understanding, he decided not to impose the tariffs previously announced for February 1.

The measures were aimed at eight European countries that participated in military exercises to defend Greenland.

Among those countries, he mentioned Germany, France, and Denmark, without providing further details about the others.

Trump said the suspension of tariffs is directly linked to progress in talks with NATO.

He also noted that negotiations will be handled by senior members of his administration.

According to Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will lead the process.

He added that these officials will report directly to him on the progress of the discussions.

Trump reiterated that there is a “concept of an agreement” with NATO and confirmed that the previously announced trade sanctions will not be enforced.

Defense, Sovereignty, and a Long-Term Agreement

In addition to the Greenland agreement, Trump announced further discussions regarding the construction of the so-called Golden Dome.

This project envisions a large-scale missile defense system, with a possible partial deployment in Greenland.

The president said the system would be designed to neutralize missiles potentially launched from Russia or China.

He stated that NATO allies would participate in building the system and in other strategic initiatives.

Among those topics, he mentioned issues related to Greenland’s mineral resources, without providing additional details.

Trump asserted that any agreement reached under this framework would be permanent.

The meeting with Rutte took place after Trump’s appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

At that forum, Trump reiterated his interest in taking control of Greenland, although he ruled out doing so by force.

Later, in an interview with CNBC, he said that Denmark accepts the agreement, arguing that Rutte represents the country within NATO.

The president declined to offer further details and assured that the understanding would mark a new chapter for the region under the Trump NATO Greenland agreement.
