- Is This the End of the Cartels?
Donald Trump’s team, following his recent election victory, is reportedly considering a «soft invasion» strategy in Mexico.
This is aimed at targeting drug cartel leaders, according to a Rolling Stone article.
The preliminary proposal involves deploying U.S. special forces covertly into Mexican territory to conduct targeted operations.
A source cited by the magazine revealed that this plan was privately discussed with Trump throughout the year and has his initial approval.

The report indicates that the strategy would not be limited to covert missions.
Other measures under consideration by Trump’s team include drone strikes, bombings of cartel-linked facilities.

As well as deploying military advisors and trainers to Mexico.
Additionally, the plan includes cyber operations to dismantle cartel networks, raids, and the capture of key cartel figures and drug lords.
“How far should we go in invading Mexico? That’s the question,” a senior official from Donald Trump’s transition team reportedly told Rolling Stone.
Since at least last year, Trump has requested detailed plans for military action against Mexico, the article notes.
These proposals reflect a hardline stance on cartels, a recurring theme in Trump’s campaign speeches and statements on border security.
Senator Marco Rubio, recently nominated by Trump as Secretary of State, has voiced support for sending U.S. troops to Mexico.
Rubio emphasized that such operations would require «cooperation from the Mexican government.»
And coordination with its military and police forces.
Although the plan has not been officially announced or confirmed by Donald Trump himself.
Six Republicans interviewed by Rolling Stone acknowledged discussing these ideas with the former president.
The concept of a «soft invasion» of Mexico has sparked speculation about its diplomatic and operational implications.
In the past, Trump has described cartels as a direct threat to U.S. security.
And has advocated for more aggressive measures to combat drug trafficking and cartel violence.
Rolling Stone highlighted that these military proposals are not new within Trump’s circle.
During his first term, the former president suggested extreme measures to address drug trafficking.
Including military options that have yet to be implemented.
Trump’s transition team has not released an official statement regarding the revelations in the magazine.
However, the internal discussions underscore Donald Trump’s focus on fighting cartels as part of his national security agenda.
Any action of this magnitude would face significant legal and diplomatic hurdles.
A United States military intervention in Mexico would require explicit cooperation from the Mexican government.
And a legal framework to support such operations—something difficult to achieve given the current state of bilateral relations.
The Rolling Stone article leaves open the question of how far Trump’s team is willing to go in implementing these strategies.
